I remember receiving a phone call once from my father. My father is one of those larger than life guys. He’s 6′ 4″, and big in every sense of the word. He is formidable. He is a lawyer by profession, so that adds to the impression he tends to make – you know how lawyers are, right? Not really scary, but certainly respectable. Now, he isn’t a mean guy or anything like that, but he does manage to give you the feeling that he is invulnerable, that he is unstoppable. And since my whole life, he had basically been exactly that, invulnerable, I was confused when I received this phone call, because he told me that he was in the hospital and that he needed me to come by and help him out. Mother Teresa spent over forty years of her life ministering to some of the poorest people in the world in Kolkata, India. As a nun, she had an experience where she clearly felt God calling her to serve with and live among the poor. She left her convent and founded the Missionaries of Charity, with the goal of caring for “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.” In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.” Upon her death, the Indian government gave her a state funeral in recognition of her life work. And, following her death, she was beatified, that is officially made a saint, by Pope John Paul II. (more…)
“Tuesday Study Group,” a women’s study sponsored by the United Methodist Women, meets, for its eighteenth consecutive year, on the third Tuesday of each month, from October until June, in the Parlor from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. This year’s study guide is “The Eight Blessings-Rediscovering The Beatitudes” by Shane Stanford. The program facilitator is Dianne Antos, and each meeting includes a “bring your own” lunch and an opportunity for participation by the group members. Newcomers are welcome.
