I am the product of a public education. That might explain some of the rather large gaps in my knowledge in fields like history and geography. But it also explains my rather high tolerance of diversity. I have nothing against private schools – my brother teaches at an excellent one in California. But one advantage of public schools is that they expose you to a representative cross-section of your community. (more…)

The other day I was driving back towards Hartford from the east. I was driving at that magical hour when the sun is starting to go down and the sunlight is such a wonderful warm golden color. And I was driving on a particularly beautiful evening. And as I came across 84, I caught a glimpse of downtown Hartford, resting amongst the tree-covered hills, and it occurred to me, this is a beautiful place. Though I’ve only been here a week, I’ve read the newspaper enough to know that there is ugliness in this town. But that doesn’t diminish the beauty that is here as well. And as I drove down the road, and as the sun shined on the city, all one could see was the beauty. (more…)
